A Keper and Kroost design… bearded men

The third and latest picture in our project of combining photography and illustration is also a portrait. A sweet little girl standing in front of a pastel coloured background holding a funny black moustache. The contrast of the girl’s innocence and the moustache intrigued me and so I wanted to develop this idea further.

In the picture’s background you can see a diamond shape patterned wallpaper. I decided to continue this pattern on the girl’s dress after having cut out the original one. Then I embroidered a wide range of moustaches and beards. I did not cut off the threads but just let them hang, so the picture would get a more edgy touch.

The moustache the girl is holding gave me the idea and the rest came naturally. A contrast of soft versus hard. Love and anger. Young and old, men versus women and good versus evil. The sweet picture of Irma challenged me to do something that might be a little shocking. Through my bearded men the picture gets a total different meaning and the photo becomes secondary to the illustration.

After three experiments we see that our disciplines, photography and illustration, can supplement, enrich but also alienate each other. As said before, in the near future we want to figure out what we can do with this new approach. We want to tap into a new market and develop works that combine photography and illustration and eventually publish and sell our art.

Please tell us what you think of the three images we have shown over the past few weeks. We really appreciate your comments.

Vinden we leuk!

A Keper and Kroost design… a geometrical still life

In the three pictures that Irma Bulkens and I chose for our project (see my latest blogpost) this is number two. A picture that Irma took on a trip to Morocco. In a small village in the Rif Mountains she was surprised by this still life. A careful layed out composition of a water jug and a piece of soap lying in the sun. As if the water is warming for a bath yet to come.

The pattern of the basket under the water jug was the motive I used for embroidering the geometrical forms. It reminded me of endless forms I used to make with a spirograph. Inspired? Try it yourself.
I based my colour palette on the pastel colours of the objects in the picture.

We find it interesting to see how the spaciousness in this picture and the geometrical editing (again with needle and thread, I love it!) meet in this image.
What is your idea about it? Let us know and leave your comment under this post. We like it!

Next week another new image in this row of Keper and Kroost design.

Of fotografische illustraties.

Paradijsvogel.

A Keper and Kroost design… Bird of Paradise!

Driven by mutual interest for each other’s work and the question how our disciplines relate to each other, photographer Irma Bulkens and I have worked together on a visual project.
Our goal is to find out how her photography and my illustrations could strengthen and influence each other. With this in mind we chose three different photographic images on which I applied an illustrative adjustment.

With room for experiment Irma and I continue to work on a series of illustrated photos, or photographic illustrations. We are looking for new imagery which we’re planning to offer in the near future.

Today we’re showing the first one. A bird of paradise. A photo that Irma took in her Studio Kroost gave me the association to give the image even more colour and expression.
I chose to edit the image in a traditional craft by hand, analogue, partly with water colour and partly by embroidery. Therefore the image became 3D and it was not a photo anymore. It is almost regrettable that we had to photograph it anew to show it here…;)

Curious in which direction this story will go? Make sure to follow my blog. Next time I will post more results. Stay tuned!

Inspirational Carousel

At the bookstore in town I bought a card display rack. It serves me as an 'inspirational carousel'. The surface of the magnetic board next to my desk wasn't big enough for all the beautiful cards and booklets I like to be surrounded with.
In my carousel there are illustrations and drawings from Camilla Engman, Annelies Verbrugge, Yelena Bryksenkova, Kim Welling, Mirdinara, Uppercase, Oh Marie!, and Dottie Angel.
Also a booklet with a remarkable binding method from COS and a small book about beach and shorebirds. Even an old photobook with pictures of the caves of Han I find inspiring!

Happy 2015!

This morning I started my first working day in the new year in my kitchen with a fresh cup of coffee. Then upstairs I passed the lovely scented hyacinths which hibernate on the staircase. And before I sat down behind my computer I passed a few posters I designed last year. Thankful for 2014 I start 2015 with lots of energy and ideas.

I wish you all the best for the new year!
